Getting Started

Complete a D1 form from the post office and send it to the DVLA (DVLNI in Northern Ireland) with your passport or birth certificate, and a passport-sized photo. You can also apply online and then send your documents through post.
Apply for a provisional license up to three months before your 17th birthday, and you could book your first driving lesson for your Biggest Day!

Check your Eyesight

Before you take your first lesson, make sure you can read the number plate and road signs from about 20 metres. If you wear glasses or contacts, then make sure they are accurate and wear them always when you are driving.

L plates

Make sure that you put ‘L’ plates on the front and the back of your car. Remember you are only allowed to drive with someone who had passed their test and is over 21 years of age. Your ‘L’ plates should be always of the correct size and it should always meet the legal specification. Also, cover up or remove whenever the car is driven by someone else who has already passed the test.
